I've studied in Xela and the reason I like to study in San Pedro is the warm climate. Xela is rather chilly for my tastes. I liked studying at the Cooperativa, because you study in the beautiful gardens overlooking Lago de Atitlan and Volcano San Pedro is looming right over you. I would recommend staying with a family, because its cost effective and you don't have to worry about cooking your own meals. Plus its fun staying with a family.
