The cookie incident.

So a German girl leaves a cookie in the kitchen to eat later in the day at my hostel. She comes back to the kitchen and notices an American man getting ready to eat her cookie. She says, “is that your cookie?” and the American says no. She states that she would appreciate it that he not eat her food. Sounds simple enough.

The American man begins to yell at the German girl that America should have wiped the German people off the map for Hitler’s atrocities against the Jews in World War II.

The American man proceeds to post signs in the hostel kitchen that all personal food should be kept in our room as to not cause confusion on whose food is whose.

Well, word gets out and all of us fellow travelers come and listen to the story and sit in the kitchen scratching our head.

There are many German travelers staying at this hostel and they can’t believe what this American is saying about them. Since I am an American it is rather embarrassing for me, plus I am of German descent.

I explain that this American has a drinking problem and is not thinking clearly in his actions over a cookie. We all laugh it off and label him the drunk American and proceed with our evening in the hostel.

It is not uncommon to run into ugly travelers with drinking problems and that are miserable in no matter what place they choose to travel.

Now the American man hides in his room and the German girl is nervous about her safety. I will not hesitate to break this mans nose if he turns to violence toward this girl.

Maybe it will be easier just to go and buy some cookies for all to eat.

The #1 tip for getting ready to travel?

Buy your plane ticket to your destination! I’ve always found that the only way to truly get ready for leaving home is to purchase your plane ticket. That forces you to mentally get all the little stuff done around home.
