Everyone has fears to overcome in life. Now imagine traveling the globe blind. Stop and think about that for a moment. Blind. James Holman was also a writer that wrote a book titled “a voyage round the world,” which you can download free at Project Gutenberg.
Jame Holman was British and while serving in the Royal Navy he became inflicted with an illness that caused intense pain in his joints and eventually rendering him totally blind at the age of 25.
James Holman starts his first chapter with these words:
“The passion for travelling is, I believe, instinctive in some natures. We have seen men persevere in their enterprises against the most formidable obstacles; and, without means or friends, and even ignorant of the languages of the various countries through which they passed, pursue their perilous journeys into remote places, until, like the knight in the Arabian tale, they succeeded in snatching a memorial from every shrine they visited.”
Author James Roberts wrote a biography of James Holman called, A Sense of the World: How a Blind Man Became History’s Greatest Traveler. This book is not free.
