With empty hotels and bad publicity about the algae bloom in Lago de Atitlan, Guatemala. The village of San Pedro is taking action to make sure everybody will eventually have clean water and the sewage will be contained from entering the lake.
Millions of dollars from tourism are at stake and the health of the lake and the people. The local municipality is taking small steps to improve the water and sewage infrastructure.
There was a big meeting held outside and stacked on the entrance to the towns municipality builds were the evidence of “real” action starting to take place. My Spanish is limited, but I heard the words “bacteria and tourism” being repeated from the towns leaders.
Lets hope other communities start to take real action to rid Lago de Atitlan of the sewage runoff.
